Hidden combinations in BaZi: hidden-stem paths and concrete examples

Hidden combination commonly refers to a combination with one or both participants found inside a branch’s hidden stems (the additional element symbols traditionally assigned inside each lower chart symbol) rather than directly in the visible stem row. Under a visible-to-hidden convention, Wu Zi can be expanded into Wu combining with Gui inside Zi. This is first a hidden-stem path that needs explanation. Hidden describes the symbol layer, not evidence that someone is concealing an event.

Start by asking where the hidden participant is

One convention compares a visible stem with a hidden stem; another compares contents of two branches. Some articles use a fixed shorthand list of branch pairs. These scopes should not be silently added together.

Same-pillar self-combination emphasizes a visible stem and a hidden stem in its own seated branch. The names may describe the same contact, not two independent combinations merely because two labels are used.

What becomes visible when three example pillars are expanded?

These examples expand the visible-to-hidden convention. They verify that a designated pair can be found in the contents without establishing its strength or transformation.

PillarBranch contentsPossible stem-pair path
Wu ZiZi contains GuiWu with Gui
Ding HaiHai contains Ren and JiaDing with Ren
Xin SiSi contains Bing, Wu and GengXin with Bing

Which hidden stems are compared in a Mao–Shen example?

Mao contains Yi, while Shen contains Geng, Ren and Wu. A hidden-to-hidden interpretation can identify Yi–Geng. That is a path between those stems, not an additional Mao–Shen entry in the six-combination list.

Shen also contains Ren and Wu; discussing Yi–Geng does not erase them. If a visible Yi–Geng discussion shares the same hidden source, distinguish revelation, roots and repeated labels.

Why is a hidden pair not automatically equivalent to a visible one?

Visible, hidden, principal and other branch contents occupy different positions. Month command (the seasonal conditions represented by the birth month), roots, nearby interactions and timing may also differ. The reading needs to explain why the hidden connection can perform the proposed function.

There is no universal hidden combination equals half-strength table. An invented precise score does not replace that explanation, and an intriguing name should not override clearer seasonal and whole-chart information.

Can hidden combination reveal concealment, an affair or secret wealth?

The label supplies no direct evidence of those events. It can explain why a role not visible in the stem row still enters the discussion; connecting it to life needs explicit reasoning and what is actually known.

If hidden alone becomes a claim about an affair, secret transaction or another person’s motive, ask what direct evidence supports it. A stem hidden in a branch and a person concealing behavior are different things.
