Hidden stems in Earthly Branches: the complete table and meaning

Hidden stems are the internal stem contents assigned to each Earthly Branch in traditional BaZi. Yin is primarily Wood but contains Jia Wood, Bing Fire and Wu Earth, which explains the smaller characters beneath Yin in a chart. These contents help identify elements, roots and Ten Gods relative to the Day Master. Hidden describes a symbolic layer, not undisclosed facts about a person.

The complete twelve-branch hidden-stem table

This table uses the common membership in Yuanhai Ziping’s hidden-stem verse. Principal qi is shown separately from the other contents. Branches without a second or third stem are not padded with extra symbols.

Are principal, middle and residual qi fixed percentages?

Principal qi identifies the leading hidden stem; middle and residual qi describe other levels. Methods differ in ordering, terminology and allocation within a month, so this page separates membership from grading.

Yin’s Jia, Bing and Wu do not mean one-third Wood, Fire and Earth, nor does their order imply a 60/30/10 split. Any numerical software weights require their own explanation.

Monthly governing-qi schedules concern which qi leads within a solar month; a hidden-stem table concerns the branch’s contents. Being in an early part of the month does not permanently delete the other stems from that branch.

Why is Zi Yang Water but its hidden Gui is Yin Water?

Branch polarity (whether a symbol is classified as yin or yang) alternates through the twelve-branch sequence, while hidden stems retain their own stem polarity. These are separate classifications; Zi’s yang label does not turn Gui into Ren.

Similarly, Yang Fire Wu has Ding as principal qi, Yin Fire Si has Bing, and Yin Water Hai has Ren. Ten God derivation uses the actual hidden stem’s element and polarity, rather than substituting the branch label.

Why can one Yin branch show three Ten Gods?

For a Geng Metal Day Master, Yin’s Jia is Indirect Wealth, Bing is Seven Killings and Wu is Indirect Resource. All three are derived against the same Geng; they do not mean that three real people inhabit the branch.

For a Jia Wood Day Master, the same Jia, Bing and Wu become Companion, Eating God (a traditional role associated with creativity, expression and enjoyment) and Indirect Wealth. Membership stays fixed while the reference changes, explaining different role labels beneath the same branch in different charts.

How do hidden stems help identify roots and revelation?

Geng finding Geng in Shen has an exact Metal root. Finding Xin in Chou gives a Metal root under a same-element convention, with different grading and conditions. Earth generating Metal is another kind of support, not automatically a Metal root.

Looking in the other direction, Yin’s hidden Bing can match a visible Bing, making a specific revelation identifiable. Hidden qi may exist without being revealed, and revealed qi still needs season, interactions and root condition considered. The two questions are connected but distinct.

How can hidden stems clarify rather than complicate a reading?

First check that the branch was assigned correctly: the zodiac animal identifies only the year branch (the lower symbol in the birth-year column), while month and hour have their own calendar rules. Then open one branch at a time and identify the root or role relevant to the question, without turning every small character into a personality story.

More hidden stems do not establish greater complexity, ability or secrecy in a person. Roots, month command (the seasonal conditions represented by the birth month), branch interactions and timing affect traditional interpretation; the hidden characters are not equal forces that are always fully active.

If two charts list different hidden stems, compare the branch, membership convention and possible use of a monthly schedule. If only Ten God labels differ, check the Day Master and hidden-stem polarity. This locates the difference without choosing whichever description feels more familiar.
