Heavenly Stem generation: direction, Ten Gods and a worked flow example
Heavenly Stem generation applies Wood → Fire, Fire → Earth, Earth → Metal, Metal → Water and Water → Wood to named stems. For example, Jia Wood generates Bing Fire: Jia supplies and Bing receives. Bing is also Eating God relative to a Jia Day Master. The relationship explains a source, a recipient and a potentially supported function, rather than awarding both symbols a bonus.
The full stem-generation table: keep every arrow
Either stem on the left generates either on the right at the element-classification level, giving four polarity (whether a symbol is classified as yin or yang) pairings per row. Jia → Bing and Yi → Ding both concern Wood → Fire, while exact Ten God (one of ten traditional relationship labels defined relative to the birth-day element) names depend on the reference.
| Source | Recipient |
|---|---|
| Jia / Yi Wood | Bing / Ding Fire |
| Bing / Ding Fire | Wu / Ji Earth |
| Wu / Ji Earth | Geng / Xin Metal |
| Geng / Xin Metal | Ren / Gui Water |
| Ren / Gui Water | Jia / Yi Wood |
Why is Bing Eating God but Ding Hurting Officer for Jia?
For Jia, generated Fire belongs to Output. Bing shares Jia’s yang polarity and is Eating God; yin Ding is Hurting Officer. With Bing or Ding as Day Master, Jia instead supplies the self and is named within Resource.
A Ten God is not a permanent occupation attached to a stem. Identify the generating arrow first, then the actual Day Master and polarity for the role.
| Day Master | Other stem | Ten God |
|---|---|---|
| Jia | Bing | Eating God |
| Jia | Ding | Hurting Officer |
| Bing | Jia | Indirect Resource |
| Ding | Jia | Direct Resource |
Why does supplying another element also expend the source?
The same Jia → Bing contact supplies Bing and spends Jia’s resources. Rooted Jia with Water support may sustain a useful flow; poorly supported Jia facing already prominent Fire presents a different question.
Yuanhai Ziping discusses both generation and excessive generation. It does not make every generating contact beneficial. This is a traditional strength model rather than a measurement of bodily energy or personal ability.
Why can Geng, Ren and Jia prompt a bridging explanation?
Geng Metal → Ren Water and Ren Water → Jia Wood form two generating steps, alongside the underlying Geng-controls-Jia relationship. Water provides a possible bridge between Metal and Wood.
For Jia, Geng is Seven Killings (a traditional role associated with challenge, pressure and decisive action) and Ren is Indirect Resource. A Killings-generates-Resource explanation needs Ren’s roots and ability to receive from Geng and supply Jia, plus other interactions. Three names alone do not establish the pattern.
What do distance, roots and an arriving year change?
Positions locate the stems, roots identify support below, and month command (the seasonal conditions represented by the birth month) describes the birth season. Adjacency alone does not establish strength; separation does not change the generating table. These conditions inform the interpretation of actual function.
An annual Ren introduces Water for that period without changing the natal month command into winter. A useful account names the arriving symbol, its time layer and why it matters to the question.
