Wang Xiang Xiu Qiu Si: the five seasonal states in BaZi
Wang, Xiang, Xiu, Qiu and Si compare the Five Elements within one seasonal setting. Under spring Wood command, Wood is Wang, Fire Xiang, Water Xiu, Metal Qiu and Earth Si. The table describes seasonal position, not whether an element exists in your chart or a ranking of lives. Identify the season and the element being discussed before looking up its state.
Derive the five states from the ruling element
Start with the ruling element. The remaining four each generate it, are generated by it, control it or are controlled by it. Spring Wood supplies the example below; Xiang is pronounced xiàng.
| State | Relation to the ruler | Spring Wood example |
|---|---|---|
| Wang 旺 — flourishing | The ruling element itself | Wood |
| Xiang 相 — supported | Generated by the ruler | Wood generates Fire: Fire is Xiang |
| Xiu 休 — resting | Generates the ruler | Water generates Wood: Water is Xiu |
| Qiu 囚 — constrained | Controls the ruler | Metal controls Wood: Metal is Qiu |
| Si 死 — lowest seasonal phase | Controlled by the ruler | Wood controls Earth: Earth is Si |
Complete seasonal-state table
Each row is a seasonal relationship set, not a final strength ranking for a chart. Earth command has its own row to show the relationships when Earth rules; this does not establish a universally dated fifth season.
| Ruling setting | Wang | Xiang | Xiu | Qiu | Si |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring / Wood | Wood | Fire | Water | Metal | Earth |
| Summer / Fire | Fire | Earth | Wood | Water | Metal |
| Earth command | Earth | Metal | Fire | Wood | Water |
| Autumn / Metal | Metal | Water | Earth | Fire | Wood |
| Winter / Water | Water | Wood | Metal | Earth | Fire |
The distinction between Qiu and Si
Qiu controls the ruling element; Si is controlled by it. In spring, Metal can control Wood but occupies a constrained seasonal position, so it is Qiu. Earth is controlled by ruling Wood, so it is Si. Calling the element controlled by the ruler Qiu reverses the distinction.
Sanming Tonghui also explains spring Metal’s constraint through Fire, the Xiang element, controlling Metal. That is another explanation of Metal being Qiu, not a definition of Si as whatever Xiang controls. Checking the spring example is more reliable than memorizing names alone.
How to read “Fire is Si in winter”
Find Fire in the Winter / Water row to identify its seasonal state. Then look for visible Bing or Ding, hidden Fire, Wood generation and contacts involving Fire. The Si label does not erase any of those symbols.
Bing can find hidden Bing Fire in both Yin and Si branches. If the birth month is Zi, those sources still need inspection. Seasonal disadvantage and rootlessness are different statements. Whether Fire serves the interpretation also depends on climate, existing strength and pattern relationships.
Is this the same as Emperor Prosperity, Death and Extinction?
No. The five seasonal states relate elements to a seasonal ruler. The Twelve Life Stages (a symbolic cycle describing an element through twelve positions, not a person’s age) assign twelve positions to stems or elements, with conventions such as yin/yang direction. Shared words like flourishing or death do not make the tables interchangeable.
When a report displays a state, identify the table and reference used. Si does not predict death and Qiu does not predict imprisonment; these historical images name positions within a system. Without the reference, the displayed label is ambiguous.
