Fan Yin in BaZi: annual and Luck-Pillar opposition versus a branch clash
Fan Yin is a traditional term for opposition. Some readings emphasize a branch clash; others require a stem control or opposition as well. Before interpreting “Luck-Pillar Fan Yin,” identify the natal pillar being compared and the definition in use. Without those details, the label does not tell the reader which relationship is present.
Begin with Jia Zi compared with Geng Wu
Suppose a natal pillar is Jia Zi and the current period is Geng Wu. Geng Metal controls Jia Wood, and Zi–Wu is a six-clash pair. A definition requiring stem control or opposition together with branch clash has two identifiable conditions here.
Change the period to Jia Wu: the stems now match, while Zi–Wu still clashes. This is different under the combined stem-and-branch criterion. An author using Fan Yin for branch opposition alone should state that broader usage.
How do Fan Yin and the six clashes relate?
The spelling 返吟 also appears in classical texts. Sanming Tonghui uses the term in a timing-to-Day-Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth day) comparison; modern accounts may extend it to other natal positions. Keep the comparison explicit when drawing on a source.
The six branch-clash pairs are Zi–Wu, Chou–Wei, Yin–Shen, Mao–You, Chen–Xu and Si–Hai. Verify the branch pair, then examine the stem separately. Different elements or a general sense of contrast are insufficient.
What comes after identifying the opposition?
Check whether the contacted branch supplies an important root and whether the stem serves a needed role. Then examine other support, combinations and restraints. A local clash or control cannot establish damage in every area.
An annual pillar may add to the same relationship. This can complicate the comparison, but two clashes are not a calculation of twice the event probability.
Does Fan Yin require reversal or upheaval?
Opposition or adjustment can explain the traditional language, but the chart comparison does not establish a move, separation or other change. A work-related reading should name the proposed tension—responsibilities, resources or something else—rather than merely predict a major upheaval.
Use it, if helpful, to examine an existing tension: is it present, and what conditions can be addressed? Where evidence is insufficient, retain the question instead of letting terminology fill the gap.
What differs between annual and Luck-Pillar Fan Yin?
The comparison can use the same rule while the layer and interval differ. Natal Jia Zi with annual Geng Wu allows separate checks of Geng controlling Jia and Wu clashing with Zi. The active period’s own contacts still matter; annual Fan Yin does not describe every year of the decade.
If the year opposes the Luck Pillar (a pair of symbols used to interpret a roughly ten-year period), identify that two-layer comparison explicitly. Jia Zi versus Jia Wu provides a branch clash alone, falling short of a stem-control-plus-branch-clash standard. A broader definition needs to be stated beforehand. Opposition does not require an actual reversal, and its definition should not change afterward to fit an event.
