What is an hourly pillar in BaZi? Why the same double hour can have different stems

An hourly pillar is the stem–branch pair of a specified time interval. Common hour branches cover two hours each, while the stem is derived from the applicable day stem (the upper symbol in the birth-day column). Today’s Zi hour and tomorrow’s Zi hour need not be the same pillar. The changing hourly layer also does not rewrite the Hour Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth hour) recorded at birth.

How do Jia and Yi days differ at Zi hour?

The Five Rats rule starts Jia and Ji days with Jia Zi, and Yi and Geng days with Bing Zi. Both characters then advance one step per double hour. This comparison assumes the applicable day stem is already established.

Which clock and location define the two-hour interval?

Common civil-time intervals are Zi from 23:00 to 01:00, Chou from 01:00 to 03:00 and Yin from 03:00 to 05:00. A true-solar-time method first applies its location and correction rules, then assigns the branch.

Historical offsets, daylight-saving repeats and an approximate “around one” can affect boundary assignment. A bare 01:00 label omits location, date and time convention.

Why should midnight checks include the hour stem?

Zi spans civil midnight. Different day-boundary and split-Zi conventions can retain the same Zi branch while deriving the stem from different day stems. Two results saying Zi therefore still need their first characters checked.

Clarify’s current natal calculation retains the entered civil date for the Day Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth day) and uses the following day stem for late-Zi hour derivation. Solar correction across a boundary needs separate checks against that implementation. There is no independent hourly date-selection interface implied by this explanation.

What can the hourly pair help explain?

Compare the hour with the natal, period, year, month and day context before discussing an added role or contact. A shorter interval does not inherently improve predictive accuracy.

For understanding a report, explaining how the pair was derived and what it contacts is useful. Arranging a meeting or activity additionally requires actual availability and participants’ plans, which a lucky-hour label has not checked.
