Family stars and palaces: Ten God roles versus pillar positions

Family stars and family palaces organize relationship themes in two different ways. Stars come from family roles traditionally assigned to Ten Gods (traditional labels for relationships to the birth-day element); palaces come from year, month, day and hour positions. In “Resource in the hour pillar,” Resource (the role family that supports the birth-day element, often interpreted through learning and support) is the relational name and hour is the location. Moving a stem to that location does not rename its Ten God.

What is a family star?

Six relatives is a traditional term for family relationships, not a count of exactly six people in a chart. Ten Gods are first classified from elemental direction and polarity (whether a symbol is classified as yin or yang) relative to the Day Master (the birth-day element used as the chart’s reference); traditions then assign roles such as parents, peers, spouse or children.

Common older accounts use Resource for the mother, Wealth (the role family controlled by the birth-day element, often interpreted through resources and practical demands) for the father and peer roles for siblings. Spouse and child correspondences also vary with male/female chart conventions and schools. These are historical interpretive roles, not detected identities of actual relatives.

Stars and palaces answer different questions

A palace does not require a particular Ten God to occur only there. A stem can repeat in several positions, and a branch can contain hidden stems (the additional element symbols traditionally assigned inside each lower chart symbol) with different Ten God names.

Does Resource in the hour put the mother in a children’s palace?

It does not move two relatives into one box. With Jia as Day Master and Gui as hour stem, the chart has a Direct Resource relationship at the hour position. A modern thematic reading using later development for hour and support for Resource might discuss continuing to learn or receiving help later.

An author using historical family correspondences also needs to identify that convention and examine the relevant symbols throughout the chart. A mismatch between star and palace is not automatically a family problem or proof that one relative must replace another.

Does a missing family star mean a missing relative?

No. A role absent from visible stems may still occur in hidden stems. More fundamentally, a star is a classification, not a list of family members. Even absence from the whole chart cannot establish an absent relative.

Two occurrences of one Ten God are not a count of fathers, marriages or children. They show a relationship appearing in multiple positions, whose conditions should be compared rather than converted directly into people.

How can modern families understand these older labels?

Historical parent, spouse and child models reflect their social setting. Adoption, blended families, a life without children and different partnerships cannot all be forced into one old correspondence table.

You can retain the terms’ historical meaning while focusing on the question that matters to you: care, support, responsibilities or negotiation. Relatives’ wishes and relationships are understood through the people involved, not decided for them through a chart.
