Five Elements and the seasons: where does Earth fit?

The usual correspondences are Wood with spring, Fire with summer, Metal with autumn and Water with winter. Earth has traditions involving late summer and the transitions between seasons. Season supplies context; it does not give everyone born in the same season one personality or outcome.

Seasons, month branches and elemental imagery

BaZi months generally change at designated solar terms (seasonal markers based on 24 divisions of the Sun’s yearly path). A lunar month’s first day or the first day of a civil month cannot simply replace that boundary. These groups describe the traditional seasonal sequence.

What are the five seasonal states?

Wang indicates the ruling element; Xiang what it generates; Xiu what generates it; Qiu what controls it; Si what it controls. These are traditional categories of seasonal prominence and retreat.

They are not health grades. Si, often translated as dead, means neither that an element disappears nor that someone dies. A seasonal table cannot capture every root and relationship in an individual chart.

Why does Earth have a different position?

Some correspondences emphasize late summer. Other assessments consider Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei as Earth months at seasonal ends, with further distinctions within each month. These approaches should not be combined into one supposedly universal formula.

Chen and Chou commonly carry moist-Earth imagery; Wei and Xu carry dry-Earth imagery. They meet different seasonal conditions, so being born in an Earth month does not complete the assessment.

What follows from knowing the season?

Identify the traditional seasonal background, then consider roots, support, restraint and output elsewhere in the chart. Season begins the assessment rather than fixing a final ranking of every element.

The seasonal vocabulary belongs to a traditional calendar and climate framework. It does not replace a local weather record or justify altering pillars according to how hot or cold a day feels.
