Yin Wood branch in BaZi: early spring, hidden stems and Yin–Shen
Yin 寅 is the Yang Wood branch that opens the traditional spring season. Its image is growth getting underway after storage: an intention begins to take shape as action. The Tiger correspondence is only one part of that meaning.
Does the name Yin mean Yin polarity?
No. Yin 寅 is the romanized name of this branch; its polarity is Yang. It should not be confused with Yin 陰 in Yin–Yang. The branch’s solar-term month begins at Lichun and ends at Jingzhe, rather than always beginning at Lunar New Year.
Tiger is the animal associated with Yin. The branch can appear in any of the four pillars (the chart’s four birth-time columns: year, month, day and hour), so its presence does not always describe a Tiger birth year. In the month position, it supplies the early-spring context.

Turning a beginning into something sustained
A modern use of the image is willingness to start, explore and establish direction. Its useful question is what support will allow a beginning to continue, rather than whether someone is inherently brave.
If new plans keep replacing unfinished ones, consider both what you want to initiate and what you are prepared to maintain. This applies the growth image without diagnosing impulsiveness from a branch.
Yin, Mao and Jia: what is the difference?
Yin describes the beginning of spring; Mao describes growth in the middle of spring. Jia is a Heavenly Stem (one of ten symbols used in the upper position of a chart column) and operates at another level of classification. Yin contains Jia as its primary hidden stem but is not identical to it.
Jia Yin is a full pillar combining the two. If it is the day pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth day), Jia is the Day Master. Finding Yin Wood somewhere in a chart does not establish a Jia Day Master.
What do Yin–Shen and Yin–Hai mean?
Yin–Shen places spring and autumn opposite one another, with several hidden-stem relationships involved. Classical discussion considers interactions in both directions; Shen’s Metal does not automatically destroy everything represented by Yin.
Yin–Hai is a six-combination pairing, while Yin–Wu–Xu forms the Fire trine. Their interpretation needs chart conditions. The pairing of Tiger and Pig cannot independently establish personal compatibility.
