What Is Gold Foil (金箔金) in BaZi?

Gold Foil is the metal-class Nayin (a separate named element classification for a complete pair of chart symbols) assigned to 壬寅 and 癸卯. Classical sources picture metal beaten thin to brighten vessels and buildings, requiring other metal for shaping and water for colored finishing; the image does not prove beauty, status, money, artistic talent, frailty, or ordinary metal strength.

What does Gold Foil establish first?

Gold Foil is the Nayin name for a complete 壬寅 or 癸卯 pillar, and its Nayin phase is Metal. It may occur in the Year, Month, Day or Hour Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth hour). The lookup unit is always one stem–branch pair in the same pillar, never a single character or a cross-pillar combination.

This lookup establishes one historical classification. 壬 remains a Water stem and 寅 a Wood branch; 癸 remains a Water stem and 卯 a Wood branch. Nayin Metal does not overwrite those ordinary Five-Phase facts.

How can you check for Gold Foil?

Read each complete pillar in an already calculated chart. A pillar that is exactly 壬寅 or 癸卯 has the Gold Foil Nayin. One matching character, a zodiac animal or a real-world object is insufficient.

Worked example: how should a 壬寅 Year Pillar be recorded?

Suppose the Year Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth year) is 壬寅. The table returns Gold Foil. A clear record says: Year 壬寅; stem 壬 is Water, branch 寅 is Wood; Nayin is Gold Foil, classed as Metal. This keeps the Nayin field separate from ordinary elemental data.

If 癸 appears only in the Month Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth month) and 卯 only in the Day Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth day), they do not form the same-pillar 癸卯 combination and do not create Gold Foil. Complete pairing comes before image interpretation.

Why does the source use the name Gold Foil?

San Ming Tong Hui describes Gold Foil as brightening vessels and buildings. It says the material must borrow other metal to be beaten thin and depend on water power for colored finishing, so the image concerns a crafted surface rather than raw, self-sufficient metal. The source then distinguishes woods that provide a base, named waters that wash or polish, fires that may damage the thin layer, earths, and other metals by exact pair. “Metal produces water” or “metal controls wood” cannot replace those stated conditions. Keep the shaping-metal and finishing-water functions distinct. Identify the exact supporting or damaging pair.

What value does Gold Foil offer a modern reader?

Its practical value is precise lookup: 壬寅 and 癸卯 share this Nayin name, which lets you locate the pair’s distinctive source image and conditions. If another pillar enters an older rule, record that full Jiazi, its location and the source before drawing a comparison.

Keep the reading order explicit: verify calendar inputs and the Four Pillars; retain stems, branches and hidden stems; evaluate Month Command and Day-Master structure; only then add Gold Foil as a Nayin layer. One Nayin name does not determine strength, Useful God, personality, work, relationships, wealth, health or event timing.
