Hidden Ten Gods in BaZi: why one branch can show several roles

Hidden Ten Gods are the roles obtained by comparing each stem inside a branch with the Day Master. Yin contains Jia, Bing and Wu: for Jia they are Peer, Eating God and Indirect Wealth, while for Geng they are Indirect Wealth, Seven Killings and Indirect Resource. Several labels beneath one branch therefore describe its several contents. The branch’s main element alone cannot assign one role to everything inside it.

Keep the Day Master fixed and compare each hidden stem

First identify the stem above the day branch (the lower symbol in the birth-day column) as the Day Master, then expand the branch’s hidden stems (the additional element symbols traditionally assigned inside each lower chart symbol). For each stem, determine whether it shares the element, is generated, is controlled, controls the Day Master or supplies it. The two stems’ polarities distinguish the roles within each family.

For Jia viewing Yin, Jia with Jia is Yang Wood with Yang Wood, hence Peer. Jia generates Yang Bing Fire, hence Eating God. Jia controls Yang Wu Earth, hence Indirect Wealth. When moving to another pillar’s hidden stems, keep Jia as the reference rather than switching to that pillar’s visible stem.

All twelve branches: hidden roles for a Jia Day Master

Hidden stems and roles correspond in the same order. This lookup is specifically for Jia and identifies roles without automatically ranking them as favorable or unfavorable.

Why Ren Zi’s hidden role is Rob Wealth rather than Peer

On a Ren Zi day, the Day Master is Yang Water Ren. Zi is a Yang branch, but its hidden Gui is Yin Water. Ren and Gui share an element with opposite polarity (whether a symbol is classified as yin or yang), making Gui Rob Wealth here. Substituting the branch label Yang Water for Gui produces the wrong role.

On a Gui Hai day, Hai contains Ren and Jia. For Yin Water Gui, Yang Water Ren is Rob Wealth and Yang Wood Jia is Hurting Officer. On a Geng Yin day, Yin’s Jia is Indirect Wealth, Bing Seven Killings and Wu Indirect Resource. All three are valid day pillars; a branch’s polarity must not overwrite its hidden stems.

Which role matters when several appear together?

Identify all members first, then examine principal qi, birth month, exposure, support in other branches and the relationship relevant to the question. Principal qi identifies the branch’s main component without making every other component permanently unimportant.

For Jia viewing Chen, principal Wu is Indirect Wealth, Yi is Rob Wealth and Gui is Direct Resource. If Gui also appears above, that Resource (the role family that supports the birth-day element, often interpreted through learning and support) connection deserves its own explanation. Calling Chen merely one Wealth (the role family controlled by the birth-day element, often interpreted through resources and practical demands) star loses information; exposed Gui does not erase Wu and Yi either.

What if Wealth is hidden but absent from the visible row?

The precise statement is that Wealth is not exposed but is present within a named branch. For Jia, the four visible stems may lack Wu and Ji while Yin still contains Wu Indirect Wealth. That distinguishes layers rather than establishing complete absence.

Keep separate positions when a hidden stem repeats. Two branches containing Wu give two locations for Indirect Wealth, not evidence of two income streams. Hidden Officer (the role family that controls the birth-day element, often interpreted through rules and demands) does not prove a secret position, nor does hidden Rob Wealth identify someone likely to steal. The names describe elemental relationships that need a fuller explanation to address a reader’s concern.
