Three cycles and nine periods: the 1864–2043 table and Period 9 Fire
Three cycles and nine periods is a long-term division commonly used in Flying Star feng shui. It splits 180 years into upper, middle and lower cycles of 60 years, each containing three 20-year periods. Nine Purple Li Fire refers to Period 9, commonly labeled 2024–2043 in this sequence. It is a shared era classification, not a claim that everyone born in those years has a Fire Day Master (the birth-day element used as the chart’s reference) or the same BaZi luck pillar (a pair of symbols used to interpret a roughly ten-year period).
How do the dates run from Period 1 to Period 9?
This table uses the common modern sequence beginning with Period 1 in 1864. The years are period labels. Under a Start of Spring convention, the actual interval runs from that solar term (one of 24 seasonal markers defined by the Sun’s position along its yearly path) in the starting year until the next period’s Start of Spring, rather than January 1 through December 31.
For example, “2024–2043” names the twenty years in Period Nine. Under a Start-of-Spring boundary, it runs from Li Chun (the Start of Spring calendar marker used as the year boundary in many BaZi methods) in 2024 until just before Li Chun in 2044. Tables may show either the last included year or the next period’s starting year as an endpoint; align those conventions before comparing them. For the exact transition, consult that year’s Li Chun time instead of assuming midnight on February 4 every year.
| Cycle and period | Year labels | Star, trigram and element |

| Upper / 3 | 1904–1923 | Three Jade, Zhen Wood |
| Middle / 4 | 1924–1943 | Four Green, Xun Wood |
| Middle / 5 | 1944–1963 | Five Yellow, central-palace Earth |
| Middle / 6 | 1964–1983 | Six White, Qian Metal |
| Lower / 7 | 1984–2003 | Seven Red, Dui Metal |
| Lower / 8 | 2004–2023 | Eight White, Gen Earth |
| Lower / 9 | 2024–2043 | Nine Purple, Li Fire |
What does Fire mean in Nine Purple Li Fire?
Nine is associated with the Nine Purple star, the Li trigram and Fire in this traditional classification. Modern articles often extend Li’s brightness and visibility imagery into communication, image or technology. That is a modern interpretation, not an industry result calculated by the period table.
These nine-star names belong to the symbolic system, rather than directly representing nine planets exerting measured forces on individuals. Neat 180-year and 20-year divisions do not by themselves establish the cause of an economic or social change.
Why is Period 9 different from my personal luck pillar?
BaZi luck pillars are derived from the individual chart and the method for starting and sequencing luck, usually in ten-year steps. People living at the same time can have different luck pillars. The twenty-year nine-period sequence instead assigns a shared era label.
Two people in Period 9 might have Jia Wood and Xin Metal Day Masters. Period 9 does not turn both into Fire Day Masters. An annual relationship still needs each person’s natal chart (the chart calculated for the birth moment) and luck pillar rather than substituting the era label.
Do all feng shui methods use equal twenty-year periods?
No. Identify the method alongside the period table; alternatives include a two-cycle, eight-period division. Tan Yangwu’s Xuankong Benyi discusses a different division, so mixing its rules with the nine-period table can create a false appearance of a wrong year.
Near a change, state the boundary convention. Construction, first occupancy and later alterations can also play different roles in property methods. Knowing the current era alone does not produce a complete property chart.
What is useful about understanding the term?
You can tell whether an article discusses a feng shui era, personal BaZi or social commentary using traditional imagery. A claim that everyone should do something in Period 9 becomes easier to assess for omitted personal and practical conditions.
For a personal BaZi reading, start with the Day Master, month command (the seasonal conditions represented by the birth month), Ten Gods (traditional labels for relationships to the birth-day element) and individual timing. There is no need to turn an era label into an additional natal identity. Period 9 does not settle a career, housing or spending choice.
