BAZI KNOWLEDGE BASE

Can you read BaZi with an uncertain or unknown birth time?

Begin with what the birth record actually supports. Keep an approximate interval as an interval, or leave the Hour Pillar (the two-symbol column for the birth hour) unknown when the time is missing. The useful distinction is between information shared by every plausible time and conclusions that change across an hour or solar-term (one of 24 seasonal markers defined by the Sun’s position along its yearly path) boundary. You can still read the chart while recognizing what remains unresolved.

“Around ten” differs from having no time at all

Keep the source and original wording. “Before dawn,” an hour-only record and a certificate with minutes support different precision. Check available records first. Without evidence to narrow the interval, a plausible-looking minute only fills the field; it does not establish the time.

Nor should “morning” be mechanically assigned to one branch. Season, location and personal usage affect phrases such as “just after dawn.” Ask whether the recollection concerns a clock, daylight or another event before narrowing it.

A 10:40–11:20 interval: what changes?

Suppose the date is away from term and day boundaries, and 10:40–11:20 is the final interval on the chosen time scale. The first part is Si hour and 11:00 begins Wu. If Jia is the deriving Day Stem (the upper symbol in the birth-day column), the candidate Hour Pillars are Ji Si and Geng Wu.

The shared year, month and day can be listed first. Ten Gods (traditional labels for relationships to the birth-day element), hidden stems (the additional element symbols traditionally assigned inside each lower chart symbol) and interactions introduced only by Ji Si or Geng Wu remain conditional. Do not average the two into a nonexistent pillar. If solar-time conversion is still pending, fix the method and locate its boundaries before making this comparison. Times producing identical pillars can share one candidate instead of generating a repeated chart for every minute.

An unknown hour can also matter for year or month boundaries

On an ordinary date, the established date and conventions often support year, month and day while the hour remains empty. But on a Jie date, morning and afternoon may belong to different months; on Li Chun (the Start of Spring calendar marker used as the year boundary in many BaZi methods), even the year may differ. Unknown time does not universally affect only the Hour Pillar.

Clarify currently leaves the Hour Pillar empty for an unknown time and uses an approximate noon assumption when locating year and month relative to solar terms. That does not recover a birth time or compare every candidate across the day. Keep the assumption distinct from established facts, especially on a term date or with historical time-zone questions.

What rectification attempts, and why it is not recovery of a record

Rectification is a traditional inference process that compares candidate charts with reported life experience. Fix date, place, zone and method first, then ask the same questions of every candidate. Do not alter the rules only for a preferred chart. Distinguish independently dated records from broad self-descriptions and retain mismatches. Close scores should remain close; a score is not a birth-time probability.

One experience can fit several symbolic explanations, and reading a description can influence recollection. Even a more resonant candidate does not prove a birth minute. Keep any inferred time distinct from the original unknown record.

Use the information that is actually available

You can begin with an established Day Master (the birth-day element used as the chart’s reference), seasonal placement and relationships that do not depend on the hour. Overall strength judgments, Hour-Pillar roles and timing details may require missing information; explain those conditions rather than treating an empty field as evidence.

This guide explains the comparison approach. It does not mean Clarify already offers interval input, exhaustive candidate enumeration or a rectification service. Unresolved time can remain a valid unknown; a complete-looking reading should not require invented records.
