What Are the Ten Gods in BaZi?

The short answer

The Ten Gods classify relationships between the Day Master and other stems in a BaZi chart. Five element relationships—same as me, generates me, generated by me, controlled by me and controls me—are each divided by same or opposite yin-yang polarity. Five times two produces ten categories.

English translations vary between schools. “Ten Gods,” “Ten Profiles” and “Ten Relationships” may refer to the same underlying system. The word “Gods” should not be read literally; no supernatural beings are placed in the chart.

Start with the Day Master

The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem in the Day Pillar. It becomes the reference point. Every relationship label answers a comparison question: how does this other stem’s element and polarity relate to the Day Master?

That means a label is not attached to a stem forever. Geng Metal may be one category relative to a Wood Day Master and a different category relative to a Water Day Master. Change the reference point and the relationship name changes.

The five relationship axes

These are conventional translations. Some sources use Peer instead of Friend, Companion instead of Rob Wealth, or Proper and偏/Indirect terminology. A clear reading should define its terms rather than pretend there is only one English wording.

How polarity creates two labels on each axis

The ten Heavenly Stems combine five elements with yin or yang polarity. After the element relationship is identified, the polarity comparison selects one of the two labels on that axis.

Translation conventions are easier to use than to memorize in isolation. For example, the Resource pair both describes an element that generates the Day Master; polarity distinguishes Direct from Indirect Resource under the school’s mapping. The important idea is that both belong to the same support/input axis.

What the ten labels mean—and what they do not

Friend and Rob Wealth

These labels describe the same-element axis. Traditional readings may use it to discuss peers, competition, collaboration or self-directed capacity. “Rob Wealth” is a technical translation, not evidence that a person steals or will lose money.

Direct and Indirect Resource

Resource describes the element that generates the Day Master. It may organize themes of support, learning, information or recovery. It does not certify intelligence, education or health.

Eating God and Hurting Officer

These names belong to the output axis: the element generated by the Day Master. Traditional interpretations may discuss expression, production or how capacity becomes visible. “Hurting Officer” does not predict violence or wrongdoing.

Direct and Indirect Wealth

Wealth describes the element controlled by the Day Master within the generating-and-controlling model. It can organize discussion of resources, stewardship or practical demands. Its presence does not guarantee money; its absence does not predict poverty.

Direct Officer and Seven Killings

These labels describe the element that controls the Day Master. Traditional readings may connect them with rules, pressure, responsibility or challenge. “Seven Killings” is historical terminology, not a danger assessment or prediction of harm.

A worked relationship example

Suppose the Day Master is Jia, a yang Wood stem. In the Five Elements cycle:

• Wood is the same element as the Day Master, so Wood stems fall on the peer axis.
• Water generates Wood, so Water stems fall on the Resource axis.
• Wood generates Fire, so Fire stems fall on the output axis.
• Wood controls Earth, so Earth stems fall on the Wealth axis.
• Metal controls Wood, so Metal stems fall on the Officer/Seven Killings axis.

Yin-yang polarity then selects the member of each pair. This example demonstrates the calculation logic only. It does not interpret a person, because position, season and the rest of the chart have not been considered.

Why one Ten Gods label is not your identity

A chart contains several relationships at once. The same category can appear in different positions and combinations, and traditional methods weigh context rather than reading a label in isolation. Reducing someone to “an Eating God person” or “a Seven Killings type” discards most of the chart and encourages stereotypes.

Names can also sound stronger in English than their technical role warrants. Responsible writing translates the relationship first and treats dramatic historical labels with care.

Are the Ten Gods religious?

No. In BaZi usage they are relationship categories derived from element and polarity comparisons.

Do I have only one Ten God?

No. A chart can display multiple categories because several stems and branches are compared with the Day Master.

Which Ten God is best?

None is universally best or worst. The labels describe different traditional functions, and their interpretation depends on context.

Does Direct Wealth mean I will be rich?

No. It is a technical relationship label, not a financial guarantee. Financial decisions require real-world information and, when needed, qualified advice.

Does Seven Killings mean danger?

No. It does not diagnose risk, violence or character. The name should be explained as part of the traditional control relationship, not sensationalized.
